Waste Acceptance Criteria
WAC Testing for Soils & Construction Waste
We provide clear, compliant WAC Testing (Waste Acceptance Criteria) to help you send soils, construction and demolition waste to the right landfill or recovery route – without delays or rejected loads.
- WAC (10:1) leachate testing for Inert, Non-Hazardous & Hazardous landfills
- Accredited laboratories and pragmatic interpretation
- Support for developers, contractors and consultants nationwide
Need standard waste classification instead?
See our Waste Classification service.
What is WAC Testing?
WAC Testing (Waste Acceptance Criteria) assesses how contaminants could leach from waste in landfill conditions. It does not replace waste classification – instead, it confirms whether your material meets the WAC limits for Inert, Non-Hazardous or Hazardous landfills.
The results are used by landfill and treatment facilities to decide if they can accept the waste and which cell or process it should go to.
When do you need WAC Testing?
- Sending soils, crushed concrete, tarmac or demolition arisings to landfill
- Landfill or recovery sites request WAC results before accepting material
- Planning conditions, permit requirements or remediation strategies specify WAC (10:1) testing
- You want to confirm whether material can go to a cheaper Inert or Non-Hazardous route
If you’re not sure whether WAC is required, we’ll review your project and advise on the most proportionate testing approach.
How EnviroSolution Helps
We keep WAC Testing straightforward – from sampling through to clear recommendations that your landfill or recovery site can rely on.
Sampling & Planning
- Sampling strategy proportionate to site size and risk
- On-site sampling or guidance for your team
- Chain-of-custody and courier arrangements
Laboratory WAC Testing
- WAC (10:1) leachate testing with accredited labs
- Suites tailored for soils, C&D waste and process residues
- Turnaround options to suit your programme and budget
Interpretation & Advice
- Clear summary table and explanation of results
- Landfill route (Inert / Non-Haz / Haz) and any restrictions
- Pragmatic advice on segregation, reuse and cost control
Typical costs
Costs depend on the waste type, number of samples and turnaround. As a guide, WAC (10:1) testing typically starts from around £180 + VAT per sample, with discounts for larger batches.
Typical projects
- Housing, retail and commercial redevelopments
- Road, rail and utility schemes with surplus soils
- Brownfield remediation and site clearances
- Landfill capping, restoration and infill schemes
A Simple 4-Step Process
We use a consistent process so you always know where you are – from first enquiry through to final report.
Initial discussion / online form
We review your site, waste type, volumes and programme, and confirm whether WAC Testing is required.
Sampling & dispatch
Samples are collected and sent to the laboratory with full chain-of-custody documentation.
Laboratory WAC testing
Accredited WAC (10:1) leachate testing is completed, with turnaround agreed at the outset.
Report & follow-up
We issue a clear report, discuss results with you and, if needed, speak directly with your landfill or regulator.
Waste Classification vs WAC Testing
Many projects require both services. We can deliver a combined package so you only explain the project once.
Waste Classification
- Classifies waste as Hazardous or Non-Hazardous
- Uses WM3 guidance and EWC codes
- Required before waste is moved or accepted
- Determines how waste must be handled and documented
WAC Testing
- Assesses leachability under landfill conditions
- Checks compliance with Inert / Non-Haz / Haz landfill limits
- Often requested by landfill or treatment facilities
- Helps you choose the most cost-effective disposal route
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does WAC Testing take?
Standard WAC (10:1) leachate testing is often available within a few working days, depending on the test suite and laboratory capacity. Faster options may be possible where the programme is tight.
Do I always need both WAC and waste classification?
No. Some schemes only require classification; others need both. We’ll advise on the most proportionate and cost-effective approach for your project.
Can WAC Testing support reuse instead of landfill?
WAC data, combined with waste classification and a suitable reuse framework (for example a Materials Management Plan), can help support options other than landfill. We can explore these with you.
Where do you work?
We support projects across the UK, working remotely with your team or visiting site where needed.
