CEMP: Biodiversity sets out how an agreed ecological strategy will be put into practice on site. It should be prepared with reference to existing ecological evidence and the development programme.

When this service is used

Requested through ecological planning conditions where construction could affect wildlife habitats, protected species, biodiversity features or nearby designated land. It is separate from the general construction CEMP.

Planning and project supportUsed where a condition requires biodiversity protection zones, species precautions and ecological oversight during construction.
Risk and programme controlVegetation clearance timing, protected species and contractor access can directly affect permissible construction methods.

  • Species protection and sensitive working method statements
  • Timing of sensitive works and ecological supervision triggers
  • Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) duties where required

  • Latest Preliminary Ecological Appraisal or other ecology reports
  • Site and landscape plans with working areas
  • Construction programme and clearance details
  • Protected-species licence information where applicable
  • Details of proposed ecological supervision

Protection of biodiversity while construction is underway

Representative ecological habitat management and protection setting.
What a robust scope should cover
  • Review ecological survey recommendations and condition wording
  • Identify protection zones and sensitive features
  • Set workable seasonal timing, fencing and method statements
  • Define Ecological Clerk of Works attendance and escalation
What the work should leave you with
  • Clear practical measures for the construction team
  • Defined responsibilities for ecological protection
  • Evidence for the planning authority to review the proposed approach
Why the detail mattersProtected-species licences, additional surveys or ecological supervision may be required separately; a written CEMP cannot replace those activities.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between a CEMP and CEMP: Biodiversity?

A biodiversity CEMP addresses ecological protection during construction; a general CEMP addresses broader construction environmental impacts.

Does it include an Ecological Clerk of Works?

The plan can specify ECoW duties and attendance, but actual ecological supervision is separately arranged as required.

Can we use an existing ecology report?

Yes. The existing survey and mitigation proposals are essential inputs, subject to review for validity and currency.
