Rapid Contamination Investigation for United Utilities
Rapid-response intrusive investigation in Barrow-in-Furness to assess potential contamination on previously infilled land.
The Project
EnviroSolution was commissioned to undertake a rapid-response survey of land in Barrow-in-Furness after an immediate assessment of the site's contamination status was requested. The land had previously been filled after use as a stormwater drain storage tank.
The Challenge
The client required prompt evidence on whether historic use and infilling had left contamination that could affect further operations.
The Solution
EnviroSolution completed an intrusive site investigation using hand-dug trial pits and soil sampling. The survey identified asbestos contamination within the ground at approximately 300–500 mm depth and recommended further work to determine whether it was localised or more widespread. Laboratory results were also reviewed against the relevant soil guideline values.
The Benefit
The investigation provided the client with rapid evidence on site conditions and a clear basis for the next decisions. EnviroSolution quoted and mobilised within a week and completed the work to the required programme.
